I'm also asking why a simple http server wouldn't work...

Wget does FTP...

wget -r ftp://username:password@ip/directoryname

I guess I'd bit a bit remiss if I didn't mention that in that same stackexchange link I gave above that someone is speaking of Mac's Finder being able to do some FTP. Of course, FileZilla also is available for Mac:

I'm asking myself if there's some reason that running some FTP Server software on the VM wouldn't work? It might be simpler for a Mac. I'm a bit surprised some of this stuff isn't available by default, but...

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questio ... l-on-macos

see the bit about Homebrew: https://brew.sh/...
brew install inetutils
...

Code: Select all

brew install inetutils
is even better. It installs those old school GNU network utilities, acessible from the command line:

- dnsdomainname
- ftp
- rcp
- rexec
- rlogin
- rsh
- telnet

Last version that officially compatible with Win2K, they say newer may work, but mileage may vary.

I kinda scoured the net to find something that resembled a trustworthy source.

Oh LAWDZ! The sky will fall according to the power-that-be in Filezilla's forums if you try to download old versions of their software. Okay, okay we get it...

So... good and bad news!
In the end I can't access Mac folders, I've tried everything. The Windows 10 uses a program that is part of Parallels Tools, called Shared Folders. But this doesn't exit for the Win98 and there seems to be no way to see the Mac from inside Win98.

To the tinkerer go the spoils...

Sounds like you have it working well enough to play some games on and then some. If you figure something out for transferring/sharing files (other than making ISOs), let us know.
I can't believe I'm resurrecting this stuff. Looking back on it, I think some of the stuff I was touching on such as the setup switches, were problems FLATFOOT_57 wasn't really having...Anyway, I found this blog post about running on a modern Mac using a VM called UTM. I'm not really interested in the whole enchilada (the particulars of that VM, etc.), just the bit about how whoever wrote this blog entry transfers files between the host OS and the VM.

https://jensd.be/1640/windows/run-windo ... ac-with-m1

Of course there's what FLATFOOT_57 already pointed out that works:
You can use the virtual CD drive in UTM to mount and unmount different ISO images, as we did a few times in the above steps already. Do keep in mind that bin/cue or mdf files will first need to be converted to the ISO format before they are usable.
Now the more interesting bit:
After some searching, for me using FTP, although kind of considered unsafe as well, worked the best. It’s not easy to find a working FTP-server for a modern macOS version like Big Sur or Monterey but fortunately I found an application called QuickFTP Server. This app is free and can be installed from the App store in macOS.
An FTP server ran from the host OS! Duh! Why didn't I think of that?! The blog post walks through the set up of that particular FTP server software, not sure that QuickFTP Server works on whatever version of MacOS that FLATFOOT_57 was using, but surely *some FTP server software* could be made to work in a similar manner...

In the moment I have everything working: video, sound, network card (the LPT1 port stopped appearing, I think it gave up), and even the internet is working in the Win98!

Thanks a lot for all help, Steven! Wouldn't have made without you!
I tried to do what you've said, I still have a few unidentified hardwire but was not able to install anything more using those drivers.
Anyway, it works!

Best regards,

Years ago (I sure the MSFN thread is still there), I installed 98SE on an eMachines W3629. While setting up 98SE, I ran into some troubles getting all the hardware to work. Well, after searching and searching on Google, I finally came across this site (URL may be different than it was back then):

http://www.windows98.xf.cz/

A dude going by Rayer (maybe XRayer) had put together a package of drivers (in some cases it only updates the name in the Device Manager). It's the intelinf.zip file. I used it and it helped get me going, but I later found that I could use Intel's actual INF installer for Win 2K/XP to update those devices. I had to extract it using 7-zip, go in to the Device Manage and manually point it to the folder.

Here's an older version of that that still mentions Win2K (thinking an older version might be better, 98SE after all):
infinst_autol.exe
(1.08 MiB) Downloaded 5934 times
Here's the latest non-beta, official last version of 7-zip for 98SE:

https://www.7-zip.org/a/7z920.exe

Regarding that package from Rayer... As mentioned at his site and if you dig up that old thread where I was setting up the w3629, LoneCrusader picked up the package and updated it further.

at Rayer's site, it's the intel_inf_94.zip file, you could check MSFN to see if it's been updated further...

For now, my advice, for what it's worth:

I'd install 7-zip, extract the files from the exe I've attached and see if you can update driver for any 'Unknown Devices'. I'd then try to update pretty much everything in the Device Manager (EXCEPT USB stuff) by choosing update drivers and pointing to that folder.

If you can get more stuff up and going, I might do a clean install run the exe I gave you in the earlier post, install the drivers for everything except the network card, update drivers using the directions above (after extracting), rebooting when needed, then install the network card driver. Then if needed/wanted check LoneCrusader's packages.

This is just kinda a general suggestion, I obviously don't know what specific issues you may encounter.
