Fool's design.
Requiring login for commenting is foolish. Always has been. Always will be.
I agree. And that's the main reason I don't reply on most blogs I would like to. A pitty but I realy don't have time registering everytime I want to post a comment and the website is different.
Also foolish are the almost unreadable "captcha" sometimes even when you are already logged in. I have seen some... I regret I didn't make print screens to post them here.

Indeed! We have had ParanormalStories.com for years and years (since 2002) and never, have we asked for registration or an idiotic "captcha". All it takes is just 2 minutes of your time once in a while to clean out the junk (spam). The result is a pleasant environment for your visitors, even random ones, to make a comment with ease.
Our thinking was that even though a visitor might only visit once, it is important to allow that one random visitor to speak his/her mind because what that person posts might be of benefit for other readers.
Putting obstacles for your visitors makes many good commenters to never reply == Loss of knowledge.

All excellent examples too. Exhibits A-Z at their trials for violations of the Eighth Amendment - cruel and unusual punishment of their web browsing victims.
CAPTCHA authors are sentenced to hang by their necks until they are ... well just leave them hanging instead.
I like this phylosophy of letting everyone post a comment.
And hate those "engineers" who think message board moderation can be done programaticaly. It never works.

There's a cure for that, and it guarantees to be an effective deterrent - future CAPTCHA designers will be on their best behavior and the current author will never do it again!
