Fool's design.

There was too little free white space in the dialog so they decided to cut out the open button to free up some more white space.

After all, a hidden double-click is a much better way to confuse the users.
Ultimate goal is to just have a white window with nothing inside it.
Design 101 at Microsoft.

It's a good thing we are using mostly LCD/LED displays nowadays, eh? If we used mostly CRT's these days all that whitespace would actually cost real money in wasted electrons. You know, naturally black screens and all.

Still I wonder, are these idiots blind? Tiny black text on massive white background means anti-dilated (pinhole) pupils. Where have they been for the past few decades? This is not advantageous to normal human vision. It actually causes squinting and requires a counter balancing opposing light in the room (behind you).

Wait until the day comes when we shift to discrete LED's in our monitors (rather than LCD phased backlighting). This will be a throwback to CRT methodology, where it costs more to make white than black and all the Windows 8 conventions get flushed right down the toilet bowl.

By Microsoft's "logic", that would probably be excellent. You would have to buy a new Windows version, better suited for LED monitors. haha

They have also removed the ListView-columns which used to be on top of the reminders' list. Second columns still does not have enough space after all these years so the text inside it becomes "Some tex..." and now without those columns, there is no way to see the entire text anymore.

I suppose those two columns were eating all this delicious gray and white space. :lol:

Now now, don't be so harsh. You simply need to remember that if you hover the mouse cursor over the center top half, the actual reminder will come into view, whereas depending on where you middle-click down in the lower right you'll then get the various things that you can do with the reminder. A left doubleclick in the leftmost pixel at the bottom will bring up the choices for how long to snooze.

That is so true. The entire "design" of Office 2013 looks like someone just drafted some crap with a pencil on a paper and they just took and put it into RTM version.
