I can honestly say that I'm willing to learn how to use a different operating system, but I do expect it not to limit me in the ways that Microsoft is attempting. In fact I've been so disgusted with the direction Microsoft has been taking for quite some time, I've been trying several Desktop Environments on various Linux distributions for some time.
He then mentions his father being floored when double clicking a photo in email opens a Metro-style photo viewer and takes over his whole screen and his father can't figure out how to get out of it.
All that's happened to him is that Microsoft and I have colluded to take away a computer that worked and replace it with one that doesn't. That, dear reader, is where my guilt came from.

You have colluded to take away usability, functionality, to limit end-user to a specified number of "apps" on the screen, to attempt to force us to use an Operating system that is not really designed for a keyboard and mouse. Yes, I do realize that I can get to a "desktop" and run as-you-put-it "normal desktop apps", but how long do you think it'll be before this functionality won't be supported by Microsoft any longer? How long will it be before Windows users are forced to buy all "apps" from the Windows Store and all those "app" developers are forced to donate a percentage of profits to Microsoft? That will be the end result of your shilling for Microsoft. Your shameless shilling is where the guilt should come from.
As to the example you gave regarding your father, perhaps the question you should be asking yourself is, in whose universe is a image viewer supposed to claim all the monitor's real estate on a fucking desktop computer.
As to Windows, Microsoft and all their other products, the geeks either have or are in the process of moving on. It's only idiots like you who are impressed with huge rectangles and squares on a computer monitor that are clinging on.
