Just so we're clear -- try the patched:

Unofficial Windows 98 SE Out Of Memory Errors VCACHE.VXD 4.10.2223 Fix

I think it'll work, if not we might be able to patch it to CACHE smaller.

I realized that may not be clear! Just use the Unofficial Windows 98 SE Out Of Memory Errors VCACHE.VXD 4.10.2223 Fix, see if it works.

I just downloaded it from MDGx's site, and it works on my system with 3 GB. I don't know about over that though -- don't quite know all the nuances of how that would go.

All I'm saying is: That can be done in a more elegant and faster way, without modifying vcache file.

But if you really enjoy when manually unpack vmm32 and manually patch vcache and manually patch the vmm32 from 98 CD and than manually pack it again.
If you like that, do it, nobody can stop you.

Okay, apparently we need a conversation or perhaps I'm being really thick. Vcache is modded? Even if it's done through (while it's in) VMM.vxd?

If that's true I would assume that the mod is doing something similar to the file PROBLEMCHYLD and I are talking about, basically it would limit Cache somehow.

I meant :

Even if it's done through (while it's in) VMM32.vxd?

Damn those similar file names!

I'm a little slow, but I never catch on! I SAW THE LIGHT!

I GOT IT NOW.

If I recall correctly, the Unofficial Windows 98 SE Out Of Memory Errors VCACHE.VXD 4.10.2223 Fix limits Cache to 384 MB. The magic question is if that will work with 4GB RAM?
