Alright so i get this error which freezes the system "Explorer caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0001:000075a2" so i decided to try your service pack to possibly fix it. After installing your latest 2016 version of sp3 (only core system files) and restart, nothing was fixed. I get the error randomly. How to fix it?

I'm not sure what it can be but it could be a hardware issue, maybe bad RAM or bad sectors on your drive. Try doing a checkdisk ("chkdsk" command) on the drive, if it's a bad sector, checkdisk can repair it.

Hello,

I'm doing fresh install of W98 and encountered some issue: when I install Maximus-Decim Native USB 3.6 before/after the installation of service pack then it's not possible to safely remove USB drive.

(Moderator note: Original thread topic: Unofficial Service Pack Windows 98SE v3.55. Merged into this one.)

Hello.

I downloaded the software pack from your website and ran the tools. I had actually missed the very important point in your instructions that if I am using IE then I shouldn't be downloading the core packages. But that's exactly what I did. I downloaded one or two of the core packages and the computer stalled. After a hard reset I could not get back beyond the long single beeps. After a while I replaced one of the RAM modules and it worked. Switched off the PC and started it after 24 hours. Suddenly the beeps came back.

I am now horror stricken. How can I help myself please?

Additionally I checked the RAM modules (three of them). One of them has conked out post upgrade.

Well I doubt software can kill your RAM modules  ...but PROBLEMCHYLD might be able to shed some light on your issue, await his response in here please.

First I suspected the RAM slots. So I checked slot by slot with one module after another. Ultimately it was clear (and fortunate) that the slots were ok.

next I checked each module and found two were gone. Till before the update, past many months, this never happened. Only after the computer froze after I erroneously ran two of the core apps and I had to hard reset to restart it. After the PC started, I tried restoring the registry using scanreg /restore. Didn't complete successfully and asked for a restart which is when the PC started beeping single long beeps (Phoenix).

Fortunately I had a few modules from past 10 years or more as spare, so I replaced both modules and everything is running fine now.

Still zapped though about two modules burning out together.

Anyway I shall wait for a feedback.

Thanks.

I have an obscure technical question for you. How exactly do files like kernel32.dll and ntoskrnl.exe play with Windows 98? If I recall correctly ntoskrnl.exe is part of the NT kernel's lower layers. Is the NT kernel somehow running in the Win98 VMM to implement new APIs?

Thanks.

Thraka wrote:Hello. First time user here. I've read a bunch, read the chm.

I have a totally fresh 98 SE install. I install the drivers. Then I launch the SP3 program, choose Main Updates/Core Files. Reboot. Any time the CHM pops up it's blank. Web views in explorer are blank.

I'm thinking this has something to do with the whole IE is dead on the machine. How do I at fix it though so I can browse the CHM (or any CHM) again?

Exact same experience. First tried it on a VirtualBox VM, then on a Compaq Deskpro P650 EP (Pentium III 650 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 440BX choose, Matrox Millenium G400).

Fresh install of full retail Windows 98 SE (from http://www.winworldpc.com). Followed instructions to install all drivers first, then chose the main system updates. After installing and rebooting, all IE web rendering stops working.

This meant the CHM help for U98SESP3 is blank, those colorful description frame in Explorer is blank, and of course IE itself just shows a white page.

I didn't choose any of the IE core updates since I plan on using IE (because Windows uses the IE rendering engine everywhere, not just for Internet Explorer itself).

Please help if you can.

Also, can you mark which options are official and which aren't? I noticed a lot of fixes that doesn't seem to be a part of the main updates but not sure if they're part of the normal Windows Updates process if Microsoft still provided the service for Windows 98 SE.

Thanks for maintaining a niche project such as this!
