I also had the problem where the web pane on the left of the file explorer window was completely blank. In addition, I noticed the help file for the Win98 SE Service pack was blank. I somehow ended up fixing it by reinstalling Internet Explorer 6.
I had another problem though, and I can't seem to find any information about it. After installing the unofficial service pack, the arrow that appears in the lower left hand of shortcut icons is gone. I also can't change it to a different one using tweak UI. I've looked an numerous websites for an answer, but at best I've been able to verify that a number of registry entries are correct for the arrow icon to display, yet it doesn't. Can anyone offer any advice about how to restore the arrow overlay on shortcuts?

Install main updates and the arrows should revert back to original, but you lose the updated icons.
Thank you for Win98 SP3.
My WinXP laptop DIED! I found my old college desktop computer running Win98. My but this is going back in time. But I ABHOR anything Windows after XP! So here is trying to get Win98 up to date as much as possible.
Problem:
Ran the install and it says u98sesp.chm not found.
But after ignoring the message the install dialog came up.
Everything I wanted to install appears to have installed.
But...
Still no support for EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES.
I did find another USB Driver that works here:

hello, I'm having a small issue. I don't really have any experience with Win98SE, my first computer had WinXP. I recently decided I want to build a Win98SE PC for playing old games as many dont work too well on my modern Win7 PC. I managed to put together a system with the following specs:
Asus CUSL2-C motherboard
Intel Pentium 3 1000mhz coppermine cpu
320mb sdram (128 + 128 + 64)
3dfx voodoo3 2000 AGP graphics card
Turtle Beach Montego 2 (Aureal Vortex2) sound card
Intel PRO/1000GT network card
WD Caviar SE 120GB IDE hdd
350W PSU unknown brand (will eventually replace it with an Antec SL300SP when I re-cap it)
I had installed Windows 98SE, all drivers, everything working fine. I haven't installed DX9.0c, only DX7.0a, as the graphics card or the games Im gonna play on this dont require anything newer and I hear DX7 has better backwards compatibility than DX9. So I decided to try to update windows, but the default IE5 wouldn't even load windows update. I installed IE6 and now the page loads, but I throws an error about root certificate this or that, and then doesnt find updates. So I now downloaded this unofficial service pack 3.56, and tried installing it, I only sellected the main updates option, nothing else, it installed, PC restarted, and now my desktop background wallpaper doesn't work? It only shows the solid blue background color. I tried switching to one of the default wallpapers, tried restarting again, same, solid blue background, no wallpaper. Did I do something wrong, or it's supposed to be like that?

nevermind, I reinstalled windows and installed the service pack again and this time it worked
I have an old Acer Aspire 1700 and decided to use it for Windows 98, for fun ...
It installed and I could first fix the out-of-memory problem.
But when I then wanted to install the SP3.56 it did not have enough memory for expanding the file.
So I expanded it separately on a stick, instead, in a separate folder.
But how can I then run the expanded file from that folder?
