I'm not sure what all the talk about VMM32.VXD, but I don't have on it my system at all. The only files I have on a clean install in the VMM32 folder are
QEMMFIX.VXD
VDD.VXD
VDMAD.VXD
VFLATD.VXD
When I install the SP then I get the updated versions of
CONFIGMG.VXD
IFSMGR.VXD
IOS.VXD
NTKERN.VXD
UDF.VXD
VCACHE.VXD
VCOMM.VXD
VFAT.VXD
VMCPD.VXD
VMM.VXD
VMOUSE.VXD
So can anyone explain to me what VMM32.VXD is for?

Many (maybe most) of those files usually get wrapped up and compressed in to VMM32.vxd. Take a look at the VxDLib thread here:

That's why the tool was created -- so you can look at and perhaps poke around the individual files. I have to admit I've never seen a fresh install not have a VMM32.vxd!
Some update just install to the VMM32 and they should override any matching file in VMM32.vxd.

I do have on my system. I was looking in VMM32 folder instead of the WindowsSystem folder. Sorry for the misinformation

With this method, Xeno86 VCACHE.VXD patch isn't needed right?RFMaster wrote:If i succeed in that, i'll make complete patch (much better and crisper than the previous) and video tutorial "How to..."
If this patched VMM32.vxd came from the author's installation of his German version of Windows 98se, and now some of us are using it in our US/English install of win-98se, where exactly would we see any German-language dialog or menus? Do any of the VXD's packaged inside a typical VMM32.VXD file contain GUI menus, dialog or message text?
Bonus question: Would any of the VXD's that VMM32.VXD is based on be supplied by a third party (someone other than Microsoft) and hence would need to be taken into account somehow on systems that have those VXD's and want to use this patch, or would they simply be dropped in the VMM32 folder and not be rolled into the "master" vmm32.vxd file?
