Windows 98 cleartype

Okay, I've been reading over @ msfn:

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128414- ... dows-98me/

I don't quite understand why whatever420 had to delete his files when they are essentially distributed by MS through their reader download. Anyway, does anyone know what registry key(s) were needed to get this functioning in 98 (preferably universally)? Surely none of Tihiy's files were needed, were they? I don't suppose anyone has investigated getting the ClearType tuner for XP running in 98. Would the same techniques work in Win2k?

A million questions, I know.

:)

I don't have an answer to your questions but that is rather odd to delete the files. If you manage to find those files, please do attach them in here since they are legal and all but still, even Microsoft can pull the plug on some downloads.

Excellent example of why we don't allow editing of posts in here after a few minutes once you have posted something. No one should be able to go back and delete files or alter information. :geek: The rest of the Internet might live in 1984 but we don't. :mrgreen:

Ok, maybe I'm not being clear or maybe I'm not understanding. What I'm meaning is to activate it universally in the O.S...Windows uses it everywhere it can. Not just for the ebook reader. I'm not sure but, I'd think that using the cleartype tuner in XP and just activating cleartype would provide a clue. I am assuming for the Registry Entry you're providing it's just for the ebook reader.

You can see over in the thread mentioned above, that there was some issue with printing, etc. Would like to see if we could have it in 98 and deal with the issues. Sometime *fairly soon* I'm going to kick Windows 7 to the curb and see if I can poke around with this stuff.

As for the file disappearing, don't worry about that, the ebook reader is all over the internet. Just Google msreader.exe.

I found what it is in XP, but not sure if it would be this simple in 9x:

Apparently the 'HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopFontSmoothing' subkey does it in XP.

0 = Off, 1 = Regular Font smoothing, 2 = ClearType
