RFMaster, I still don't get Vcache, is it necessary to patch it at all? I just kinda assumed it was based on what was said in the German forums.

Well, if you've got German version of win98se you can do the next experiment:

extract vcache from not patched vmm32 and extract vcache from german patched vmm32 and you then compare those two vcache files

Then you'll see an interesting thing - those two files are identical. Which means vcache from german patched vmm32 is not patched. Right?

But Is it really just like that, is vcache from german patched vmm32 really not patched? It is, but not directly.

So the best answer to this question is: Yes and No

Thanks RFMaster,

I'm glad you understood what I was trying to say. I was NOT saying your patches was worthless or useless, what I was saying is, if you found a way to patch the VMM32.VXD file, I assumed the vcache/vmm.vxd wasn't needed. I see that the VMM.VXD is needed. Thanks again for your hardwork.

Yes.

Yes they(vcache/vmm.vxd) are not needed.

But if you really have to install qfe288430, in this case vmm.vxd must be patched too. Otherwise, the system will be frozen at startup.

PROBLEMCHYLD, have you tested with USP? I'm thinking about reinstalling 98 SE. My plan as of now is try reinstalling by limiting RAM with HimemX, like I did before applying the USP, among a few other things and then patching in a manner similar to what I did before (rebuilding VMM32.vxd) once all patches are in place. Does that plan sound bad to anyone?

PROBLEMCHYLD, just so I know, USP includes the Unofficial Windows 98 SE Out Of Memory Errors VCACHE.VXD 4.10.2223 Fix:

REMOVED BY MODERATOR: Hyperlink. DUTCH LAW DOES NOT ALLOW HYPERLINKING TO WAREZ MATERIAL.

Correct?

Thanks again guys. Here is what I did so I never have to patch VMM32.VXD ever again.

1) Copied the entire Win98 CD to the hard drive.
2) I extracted the original VMM32.VXD file from the Win98 CD.
3) Patched VMM32.VXD with G-VMM32 Patcher.exe. (RFMaster Patch)
4) Copied patched VMM32.VXD file to the root folder. (Where all the cab files are located)
5) Burned a new Win98 CD.

Whenever I do a clean install, it will use the newly patched VMM32.VXD every single time.
This is the cleanest and best method in my opinion, because it will read all of the ram right off the bat.

@ Steven W
Yes, it does, but I just removed it in 3.34 because its not needed. Or should I add the new one by RFMaster?

My advice, try it, if it works, leave it.

I think RFMaster is saying the way I patched Vcache for more than 1 GB was a waste of time.

The thing about replacing the file on the CD, you don't have to keep rebuilding the VMM32.VXD. The VXDs will be added to the patch file.
