Hello,

This is a question about installing .NET framework with the Unofficial Windows 98 Second Edition Service Pack 3.56.

In the release notes for 3.56, I could read:

Updates that won't be added

Internet Explorer 6
NET Framework
Windows Image Acquisition 1.1 (WIA)
Windows Media Player 9 (WMP)

.NET framework is not be included in the service pack, but is it compatible?

On the first page of this thread it says:

[1] Install Windows 98 Second Edition (with or without 98lite).*
[2] Install all drivers for your hardware.
[3] Install Internet Explorer (any version).*
[4] Install latest DirectX 9c.*
[5] Install latest Service Pack 3.x (Main Updates).*
[6] Install optional components of Service Pack 3.x.*
[7] Install MS Office.*
[8] Install KernelEx, 98SE2ME, Revolution Pack.*
[* = Optional]

In what position should I install .NET framework?

I understand .NET framework versions have different functionalities and different versions can be installed together (installing 1.0, then 1.1 and finally 2.0). Is that correct?

Thank you for this awesome service pack and for your time.

-Poulp

Alright, so... I must say I am thoroughly confused on how to accomplish this install. Here's what I've got. I've got a laptop running Windows 98 SE Version 4.10.2222.A. 512MB RAM & 18GB HDD.

So, i downloaded U98SESP3.EXE and proceeded with the install on this Win98SE machine... after I click on it I get the disclaimer which I agree to and then the program immediately starts extracting stuff. It doesn't give me any check boxes to select certain items to install...nothing like that. At some point during the extraction it pulls up a command prompt and shows a directory where it's extracting the files. After it's done extracting, the program closes and pulls up the U98SESP3 help file.

At this point, nothing has appeared to install, doesn't ask to reboot...nothing like that. so I rebooted anyway, no changes. I then went to the extraction directory which is C:\windows\temp\IXP000.tmp
Alright...so I see a bunch of INF, CAB, EXE & BAT files... am I supposed to click on one or some of these EXE files? Why didn't the U98SESP3 program ask me what to install and do the install itself? I don't see any installation prerequisites requirements that I'm missing. Thoughts???

After reading instructions in the chm file, close the file and a list of options should appear. Thanks for testing the latest SP

Thanks, I stumbled on that on accident after I wrote this post! I was leaving the help file open and wondering why nothing happened. Turns out I had to close it first.

I've installed just about everything now from your update. What's the latest browser I can use? IE 6?

can I install Kernel Ex on top of this to get more modern browsers too ?

any other updates/mods I should install ?? Thanks!

Yes, installing KEX will get you some of the latest browsers. You should be good to go after that. KEX is a field I'm not very savvy in, so I won't be able to answer many questions on that topic.

Hello! Thanks for all your hard work. I've been using your service pack for quite some time. However whenever I install it, I get Windows 98 SE icons blurred and a bit ugly when they're set to 48x48. Not as crisp as in vanilla Win98.

Is it possible to track back this issue and possibly revert the offending file to the original version?

Thanks

Just my notes and ideas on the SP under different tests in VMware. Probably could be updated in newer versions, or maybe it isn't necessary. As it is, I've never had any issues and I install this on any desktop running 98SE. It makes a difference in terms of performance running games and also fixes certain glitches when running on newer PCs. Thank you for this!

Using IE6 SP1 and 98se2me explorer shell, any following service pack update by simply installing main updates will break the web page features in the explorer shell and browsing in IE6. Displaying gif files in IE6 comes up blank. The one solution I saw at the time was reinstalling IE6, but it doesn't always work.

If I throw 98lite sleek/micro, the SP replaces the 95 explorer shell with the updated 98 shell. Some files can't register, but you can just hit ok and copy back the 95 shell files.

With the default explorer.exe and shell32.dll from the SP, mdgx has some newer unofficial updates for these two files (4.72.3812.634 for shell32 http://www.mdgx.com/files/SHELL98.EXE, 4.72.3612.1710 for explorer.exe http://www.mdgx.com/files/EXPLOR98.EXE).

The winsock files could be replaced with the WinME equivalent, although 98se2me covers that.

The Win3xstart patch to run Windows 3.1 under DOS 7.1 modifies IO.SYS, and the SP overwrites this file when using the main update. One can simply run the patch again and it should work.
