Did you have any other packs installed?

No, I installed 98lite, then I installed the service pack.

I am running Win 98SE on Oracle Virtual Box VM under Windows 7. After a clean install of Win 98SE on Virtual Box, followed by U98SESP3.EXE as further detailed below, I can no longer properly install an HP Deskjet 6980 printer as a network printer. I receive a message regarding unable to access tcpmib.dll during the install. I suspect that what ***might*** be happening is that the Deskjet 6980 installer sees something about the U98SESP3 updated Win 98SE installation that makes it think it is installing under Win 2K or Win XP rather than Win 98SE, and that it therefore tries to use a module that doesn't exist in Win 98SE. In any case, here was my installation sequence:

1. Created Virtual Box VM with 512 MB of RAM and a 16GB virtual HDD.
2. Installed Win 98SE directly from an original Microsoft bootable CD.
3. Installed Internet Explorer 6 SP1.
4. Installed U98SESP3 main updates.
5. Installed DirectX 9.0c.
6. Installed U98SESP3 Performance Tweaks and Time Zone Update June 2016 options.
7. Attempted installation of HP Deskjet 6980 drivers (downloaded directly from HP web site). Failed with message regarding failure to load tcpmib.dll.

Obviously, one solution for this problem (alone) would be to completely omit U98SESP3 from my installation, but that causes other problems, particularly with networking, and I have no other good way to install all of the original Microsoft updates for Windows 98SE. So I was hoping that someone might have an alternative suggestion, work-around, or bug-fix.

Thanks,
KAM

P.S. - I should add that the HP Deskjet 6980 is definitely compatible with Win 98SE. I have one hooked up and running with a physical machine running Win 98SE. Identical configuration, except that the physical machine had Windows Updates applied over the years instead of installing U98SESP3.

What error do you guys get for HP Deskjet 6980?
@ Mario
Your issue might be from stripping too much out with 98lite.
I will look into all the issues posted and try to fix them all. Thanks for the feedback.

The error message says that tcpmib.dll cannot be loaded. Upon further evaluation by trial and error loading of individual hotfixes, I have found that the unofficial fix for the KB926247 SNMP security vulnerability BREAKS ALL STANDARD NETWORK PRINTING in Win 98SE. The files supplied by that fix were designed for Windows 2K+, and contain code that is NOT appropriate for use with Win 98SE, referencing modules that do NOT exist in Win 98SE.

P.S. - Given that I have isolated the network printing problem to the unofficial fix for KB926247, is there any way to uninstall that specific fix, or to prevent it from installing when installing the main updates portion of U98SESP3?

I'll fix it, thanks. Backup the older working file until I update the package.
