So would I Install Windows Server 2012 R2, then activate Hyper-V, then install Windows Server on top of that?...

Wait... I just realized, that you CAN do that too!

I THINK that when you buy a Windows Server 2012 R2 license, it comes with one license built-in to you can install it again as virtualized operating system on top of itself once you activate the Hyper-V on it but you can check this with Microsoft support line, the licensing section. At least, I remember you could do that with Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V so I assume it's the same for 2012 R2 as well but better check with them before you order the license.

If you buy from DELL or HP, they can help you with it. I think when you build a server on their Web site, you can choose operating system and such. Also, I THINK that there was a version of Windows Server xxx without Hyper-V so when you buy it, make sure it is WITH Hyper-V. (The cost was the same I believe, Microsoft and their moronic licensing but that's another subject... )

Okay, great. I would rather install Hyper-V first, so will that be one of the installation options in the installer screen, considering it will be a version of Windows Server that comes with Hyper-V? All the documentation on Microsoft's clusterfuck website (pointless to even try to glean any useable info there) talks about setting up Hyper-V after the install.

Also, all the YouTube vids I found and other online documentation didn't talk about installing Hyper-V first, before the OS. Maybe there's not that much documentation on this?

Hm, no. Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is a seprate download. The "Hyper-V" which comes with the "Windows Server 2012 R2" is different, like a module inside it which you install and activate.

I personally never installed the barebone Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 but I reckon, it's probably an ISO file which you boot with and install the barebone hypervisor on the server.
