This is good stuff:

How to make the internet not suck (as much)

They give you a huge list of Web sites which you can put into your hosts file.

Bear in mind that they update the file from time to time, so it's good to visit it at least once or twice a month to get an updated version of their "hosts" file.

The "hosts" file is located in c:windowssystem32driversetc"hosts" and can be opened up by notepad.exe but you must run notepad.exe "As administrator", otherwise, you will not be able to save and edit the file.

It makes those Web sites redirect to "localhost" (127.0.0.1), which basically means they will be unreachable from your PC. Doing this will kill a LOT of advertisement banners and trackers when you surf the Web.

Furthermore, I have added the following Web sites to my hosts file as well, which I found somewhere online a while back. I think these will kill some Facebook creepy trackers or something:

Code: Select all

# Block Facebook
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 static.ak.fbcdn.net

I've used Adblock Plus for years and recently have started using Disconnect too. They have made the web much more enjoyable.

I use ABP and disconnect.me seems interesting. Although, I wonder how they earn money? Surely, they too, sell the privacy information? It's weird, all.

Actually, they seem to be on a donation basis. There's a similar product that does, disgustingly, collect info.

I've been using the in place of Disconnect lately: https://www.eff.org/privacybadger

It does better blocking as it learns, compared to Disconnect.

Apparently Google doesn't want Disconnect in the Google Play Store. Hmmm.

Hah! Motherfucking bastards. For our own security, of course! *lol*

I seriously can't believe that developers actually like all these walled gardens prisons. Disgusting. I have always said it and will stand by it, that if you don't have full root access to a device... it isn't your device and you don't own it.
