This is a prime fucking example of what's wrong in the U.S.A. Microsoft is a corporation, not a law enforcement agency. How the fuck does anyone justify this shit?

The company's services went offline Monday when Microsoft served it with the restraining order. Although Microsoft doesn't accuse No-IP of wrongdoing, it alleged the company failed to take prompt action when cybercriminals used its service for managing botnets, or networks of hacked computers.

Microsoft intended to simply filter out the botnet-related traffic from No-IP's domains. But a technical error knocked some of No-IP's customers offline, although Microsoft said on Tuesday the issues had been resolved. No-IP disagreed.

All Malware Defendants:
b. Intentionally and knowingly accessing and sending malicious code to the
protected computers and operating systems of Microsoft and its customers
without authorization, in order to infect those computers and intending to
cause damage and benefiting therefrom;

Operating systems of Microsoft. That says a lot, doesn't it? Why write good code when you can get laws and the courts to let you control everything.

Regardless of who makes it happen, the solution to the abuse of intermediary service providers is increased cooperation and transparency, not controversial one-off takeovers by individual private companies.

I wouldn't have used the word private, but the point is dead on.

I don't have time to read the article, nor do I care to read the blathering of another journalist on yet another technology news site with their own agenda. How did MS gain control of the domains?

...I mean, without a court order?

They did get a court order but it all seems very shady. I think they gave the control back to No-IP again but I didn't follow this too closely because by the looks of it, they can do whatever the hell they want so why even bother? :???:

The link in my second post is the order granting a Temporary Restraining Order. You can read the court's logic there. The infamous Computer Fraud and Abuse Act rears it ugly head again.
