Here's an expansion on the one you posted above:

Joking aside, while I'd much prefer some Linux distro as a general desktop operating system, I've tried out FreeBSD and it was stable and did everything that I wanted.

Going a bit off-topic now but I tried installing FreeBSD in Hyper-V to try it out. They had this ready made distro so it was just download and run. Supposed to be a clean install but when I did some looking around in the files, I found games in it. Stupid text based games. Not that such games are stupid but I mean what the fuck? I kind'a lost trust in their "clean ready to go installation" to be honest.

I will give it a second try but this time, I will try a true clean install myself, from scratch to see if things are different or not... ...another big issue I have with Linux or *BSD is the file system. I really do trust NTFS. It has never failed me. Although, due to "bit rot", it is somewhat unwise to use NTFS these days so I use ReFS. It supposed to keep things correct all the time. ReFS doesn't even need a "chkdsk" (check disk) so if you try to run check disk on it, it won't work.

I wonder if the Linux or *BSD world has similar file systems? I heard about ZFS but it doesn't seem to be hm, 1.0 yet? Or am I wrong? I don't know why I have a feeling things are always in "beta" mode in that world.

My third issue is of course, Outlook. NOTHING beats Outlook. My email file is almost 9GB! It's a HUGE database of MANY MANY MANY emails and files. I cannot afford losing it! I wonder if there is any such email application in the *nix world?

Then of course, nothing beats Visual Studio so there is that. :shh:

So far, I haven't really convince myself to switch to Linux or *BSD due to the above issues but you never know. I basically have one foot our of the door in Windows world. With Windows 10, I almost made the jump but then I managed to turn all the spyware off (because I happen to have an Enterprise edition) but really, Microsoft is pushing their luck, at least with me.

From what I know all the linux file systems are superior to NTFS on many ways but I don't remember the details anymore. And they're actually documented, NTFS isn't and in case of trouble you have no affordable recovery solutions, the free stuff works only mayhaps and paid stuff maybe. What really matters more is the file system driver. In case of FAT16 and 32 for example, fragmentation ONLY exists because the drivers wanted to maximize space use, they filled all holes they found rather than leaving room at ends of files to let them grow if needed, or to defragment a file on the fly during some file operation (stuff that all modern file system drivers do).

If Outlook barfs it turns incredibly terrible... that 9GB file is asking for trouble, back it up and start a new one. So many nightmares from work that relate to Outlook and its issues...

As for funny stuff :

Ah yeah, I know about the fragmentation issue. Outlook, yepp, big trouble! But I need everything in one place. Splitting that file is not an option. I have MANY accounts and I do search even in old emails from time to time so everything in one place is very nice. I wish Outlook would run with an SQL server! But I suppose using Exchange is overkill for my emails.
