Microsoft's goal is a lean and mean Windows running everywhere.

It's quite simple really, Microsoft is working to reduce the footprint of its OS so that it can be run on more devices and have better performance, with slower hardware.

Linux called... and said that it's already there.

Heh, Linux's been there done that, got the T-shirt, source is available, modifiable, works on device with extraordinarily little resources and devices with much memory and many processors and of course, is Free!
