Seriously, what a bunch of fucktards. They're taking a perfectly decent browser and cocking the whole thing up. Having Yahoo be the default search engine (which uses Bing as its back end) for the browser is very stupid. Who uses Bing? Ask around. Barely anyone uses it; you'll get some laughs though.

Non Hic wrote:You know, without a ton of add-ons, FireFox is 100% unusable. I CANNOT stand the new tab page. I set it to full blank but even that gear icon BUGGS THE HELL OUT OF ME so I have set a Web site (techtalk.cc ) to be my new tabe page.

Nothing wrong with having techtalk.cc as the new tab page, although I know have a specific page can have it's irritations. I just found that opening 'about:config' and just clearing the 'browser.newtab.url' entry will give a blank page. Yet another in the long series of customizations to make Firefox palatable.

I'm noticing a few things when I go in to clear that 'browser.newtab.url' string that I mentioned earlier:

I'm thinking, just to be on the safe side, that in addition I'm clearing the 'browser.newtabpage.directory.ping' and the 'browser.newtabpage.directory.source' and am going to set 'browser.newtabpage.enhanced' to false. Call me suspicious if you like.

By the way, it's grand to be able to name a file with a freaking dot, besides the one in the extension, and not being told that's a no-no.

Good points there Steven, thanks for finding them. I'm gonna use them in my FireFox profile as well.

I found another customization that I like and I think you will too, Non Hic. If you toggle the 'browser.search.showOneOffButtons' to false and restart Firefox, you'll get rid of that freaking ugly "Change Search Settings" button at the bottom of the search bar.

Ah yeah, that one I already had set but those ping things I have cleared too now. Definitely seems odd. Ping to where what when and why? *lol*

Palemoon 24.1.1 (x64)/Win7 Pro user here.

I keep thinking I shoulda gone for the 32 bit version, but whatevs on that.

I still had to hammer on it just a slight bit to get the interface itself the way I liked it. Phantomiser's "silverNblack" worked beautifully since I wasn't keen on the PM Default scheme, which I disabled.

Not that PM's Default appearance is all that bad, by the way. I'm just a throwback.

A couple of ad-blockers, some fun shit for YouTube (Let's make that glaring white turn BLACK!!) and FB Purity tossed in for pure malicious glee, and I'm satisfactorily operational.

I haven't even seen the latest Firefox for Windows, but noticing a few additional thing thrown in under those options I mentioned before:

I am now changing the URL to about:blank (seems wiser somehow). Those options for Sync are there because as we know, it's important that you get the same ad experience across all your devices!

I am thinking about the 'browser.newtabpage.directory.ping' and 'browser.newtabpage.directory.source' entries. Suppose they could be pointed to localhost. I can see the day Firefox is hauled to the localdump coming.

OMFG...

Mozilla began rolling out Firefox version 37.0 to release channel users. This update mostly focuses on behind-the-scenes changes. Security improvements include opportunistic encryption where servers support it and improved protection against site impersonation. They also disabled insecure TLS version fallback and added a security panel within the developer tools. One of the things end users will see is the Heartbeat feedback collection system. It will pop up a small rating widget to a random selection of users every day. After a user rates Firefox, an "engagement" page may open in the background, with links to social media pages and a donation page...

Solution:

In "about:config", set browser.selfsupport.url to "".
