China has banned government use of Windows 8, Microsoft Corp's latest operating system (OS), in a blow to the U.S. technology company which has long been plagued by sales woes in the country.

The Central Government Procurement Center issued the ban on installing Windows 8 on government computers as part of a notice on the use of energy-saving products, posted on its website last week.

The official Xinhua news agency said the ban was to ensure computer security after Microsoft ended support for its Windows XP operating system, which was widely used in China.

I was going to post about this, but you guys beat me to it The Chinese don't want an OS with a known backdoor/kill switch in it, and with all the stuff going on with the NSA altering hardware after intercepting packages and installing malware on OS's, they are not trusting the US. Also, notice how the announcement came right after the US announced charges against the Chinese for hacking?

By the way, is the US going to extradite the Chinese hackers? All that is is PR, showing that the US cannot stop the hacking, but they find out about it later. The PR is an attempt to stop it, but it's not go

Seems Chinese Central Television has gone a bit further and called it a "potential threat" to China's information security.

The news report suggests that the security "challenge" posed by Windows 8 is why "many countries such as Russia and Germany" are using domestic operating systems in their government offices.

Both countries have made moves to open source operating systems within their government agenices.
