I couldn't take it anymore. Who was I kidding? Start screen is HORRIBLE! I killed it with fire and bought Start8. SO NICE, NO MORE HOT CORNERS. NO MORE CONTEXT SWITCHING IN MY BRAIN. FUCK YOU MICROSOFT AND ALL THE FOOLS RESPONSIBLE FOR WINDOWS 8.X USER INTERFACE!

I'm trying to think of the closest comparison to Windows 8 I can come up with. Someone pointed out an AOL website from the mid 90's that looked close. Some say Windows 3.0 or 3.1. I don't think Windows 3.x was anywhere near this bad. The closest thing I can think of, as far as an operating system or GUI, is Tandy's Deskmate, but even it isn't quite as useless. For its time, Deskmate was okay.

It seems that you do do many tasks from one screen in that Desktmate picture, surely it is much better than Windows 8.x in that case I think Windows 8.x is more like a TV. One thing at a time, one media channel consumtion at a time, full of commercial, zero control for the user. ...and of course, the name should have been changed from Windows to Window.

If you thought that Windows 8.0 (Server 2012) looked like a Fisher-Price product (Nothing bad about Fisher-Price products, they are very good... FOR KIDS!) then you should take a look at Windows 8.x (Server 2012 R2).

I just upgraded our mirror server to Windows Server 2012 R2 and it looks EVEN WORSE than the previous version! Oh, the joys of toy colors in an operating system, especially a server operating system.

In the previous version, the colors were somewhat tolerable (not the tiles, they are never tolerable) but in this version, oh man, your eyes will bleed! What a random mess of colors! You cannot alter these or turn the coloring off.

Apparently, the previous version was not childish enough. After all, we all know that 90% of the server administrators are kids below the age of 10.

Fuck you Microsoft!

Start menu may return with Windows 'Threshold' update.

The latest bit of news, while unconfirmed and subject to change, is that Microsoft may be bringing back the full Start button experience. According to Paul Thurott, the next update to Windows (important to note that he has not confirmed the name 'threshold") will include the option to restore the Start menu to its full glory. This is an important change from what Windows 8.1 offers which is simply a button that only provides familiarity but little functionality.

Another feature that is reportedly coming will allow you to run Modern apps in windows on the desktop. This functionality is already available via third-party applications like ModernMix (disclaimer) but being natively built-in will likely appease everyone who uses Windows.Next.

...them motherfuckers! *loool* They play with their customers as if they are kids. How about just re-sell Windows 7 and call it 9? Fucking filthy bastards! They will remain filthy fools until they also bring back the Aero Glass. ...and kill the locked-in walled garden crap in Windows. Then... only then... MAYBE... I will like Microsoft again... but to trust them? Never ever again.

The lesson in all this is to ALWAYS stay with the kind of technology which is vendor independent. That you can move out of it very quickly in case insane clowns take over.

Hopefully many will feel the same way you do. For me to ever consider Windows again, Microsoft will have to show that not only are the putting back these features, but that they are taking the platform seriously too. The Windows Shopping Bag, a.k.a. Windows Store will need to, at minimum, be relegated to a removable shortcut inside of Internet Explorer. Support for and "Modern" apps will need to be included in the full-blown Window Manager if not removed altogether. Development tools for full-blown Windows (Visual C++, VB, etc.) will also have to show signs of continued support and development.

I'd strongly suggest those in corporate/business settings who rely heavily on Office as a stand-alone product, not a web-service demand that that it too show signs of development and improvement. I can't imagine any scenerio in which the Windows Shopping Bag has any place whatsoever in a corporate/business setting either. But hey, what do I know.
