The 'Shelf' (the taskbar for those coming from Windowsland) takes up a good bit of screen real estate on Chrome OS Flex. I've learned to avoid wallpapers that really don't work with that area covered (wallpapers with anything really visually interesting at the bottom of the image). While the Shelf does have an autohide, it doesn't work the same as autohiding the taskbar in Windows. It autohides only when you open an app.
RE: the shelf
I'm not complaining about the shelf and certainly wouldn't want it smaller, but, again for me, it causes some issues with wallpapers. Let's take the Bay Bridge image I posted earlier. That image is not in a 16x9 aspect ratio. It would have to be wider... So, if I crop out a 16x9 area and try to set it as a wallpaper, it just doesn't look right to me. Most people would likely say that it's fine, but it bugs me. This is very near as close as I can get it:
The problem (to me) is the first tower of the bridge. In my screenshot, there needs to be more sky above it. There is in the original image, but if I crop keeping enough of the sky, then the bottom of the tower (at least the part visible above the water) will sink below the shelf...
Maybe I'm just being anal or OCD or something, but GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

I saw the screenshot in this article earlier and thought the wallpaper looked kinda cool.

I think you and I are simpatico in regard to wallpapers. Similar tastes, yada, yada.
The closest thing to the original that I can find for the wolf wallpaper above:
I think someone 'flipped' the original horizontally (as above). To be honest I like it better flipped.
This is one from ChromeOS, even though it isn't size 16x9, it looks good:
