PROBLEMCHYLD wrote:@ aurgathor, are you using some type of VM? If not, I will try to help guide you through installation.
Thanks for the offer, but I eventually figured everything out. And I'm not running any kind of VM.

The package that was verified to be causing me grief is is the L2TP/VPN client -- my system will never finish booting after installing it, so I just left it out, and all is well, and your SP3 is a great piece of work.

However, if I can offer a suggestion, it would be nice if you could change the installer so:
a) unpacking would be done only once, and the install could be run from some directory repeatedly until it is finished
b) it would show already installed features (i.e. the checkbox is grayed out)

@aurgathor,

Are you ignoring my emails on purpose  or are you too stupid to trust Microsoft's spam filters? :problem:

Neither. Unless there is a specific reason to do so, I read my hotmail once every 6 months or so, mostly just to avoid the deletion of the account....

I just downloaded U98SESP3.EXE, Windows98SE ver. 3.56, from the "https://www.techtalk.cc/viewtopic.php?t=65" site and sent it out to the "VirusTotal" scanner. It found the following item in the 119 Mb file: Jiangmin Scanner: Trojan/Diple.wla
I think the scanner is a Chinese product, and I had only 1 hit out of 55 scanners. Could be a false positive. Scares the hell out of me though. Internet inquiry says this Trojan is a bad actor, taking over your machine. Any comments?

Using a Chinese virus scanner... which is the only one showing the virus... hm... I think there is something to be said about that, I'm not sure what but I'm pretty sure there is something to be said about it.

I never run a virus scanner. Those things are almost like viruses themselves!

But yeah, you should await response from PROBLEMCHYLD.

Regarding the hotfix 321467,

there is a slightly newer version of this patch up on the MS website,
(https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hotfix/kbhotfix?kbnum=321467)

it is the same as the old patch (maybe from the old ftp.isu.edu.tw site)

except for this added registry key:

Code: Select all

;service key for dmusic.sys
HKLM,"SystemCurrentControlSetServicesClassMEDIA00x","Enable Q321467",0x00010001,0
