'!' claims they were A.I. bots, I don't know for sure. However, it's not too difficult to imagine that, if you can design a spambot and a chat-generating AI, you could likely tie the two of them together.
The same method as spam bots. They talk seemingly general normal stuff but then they add a very tiny invisible link for spam URL in their profiles or posts. I don't own a computer right now due to financial difficulties so I can't really sort things out except just trying to delete them when I spot them.
