The scrolling on the page is laggy and maxes out CPU. You should check the CSS of this theme to make things lighter. This may possibly be fixed by removing the CSS shadows effect all around the forum.

The shadows look good, but when browsing this on a tablet or a laptop it heats up quickly and battery drains more intensively.

It probably has to do with the fixed background. When you scroll the forums, the background does not scroll with it. Will try to look into it to see if we can use a non-fixed background. Although, we do not have many visitors on non-PC devices. Good point you raise, however.

It's unclear to me how to set up an avatar here - haven't seen such option in the profile editor. Could be one of my browser add-ons blocking some script, but I doubt it - it's all unleashed on this domain AFAIK.

Also, lack of editing abilities throws me off; I'm a grammar nazi and when I happen to see a typo or something in my own posts, I want to fix it even if it's five months from now. I read about protection against hacked accounts and whatnot, but believe me - if anyone were to hack this, they would either way; this only hinders us, honest users.

I've also read the discussion with PROBLEMCHYLD regarding the ability to change topic title. This used to be a piece of cake back at MSFN (together with editing own posts indefinitely). Thing is, one would be registered to receive replies from a certain topic. The topic itself is fixed, but its details (such as the uSP title) would change periodically to reflect the latest change. Discussion should take place only there, not in newer topics, because a not-so-regular visitor might just fall out of updates when discussion moves to newer topic and there's no more replies from the older one.

One other suggestion, if I may: don't use any code from Google (such as site search or similar) - I have removed everything related to Google from my computer and most of it's domains are blocked in add-ons. I dont' want this spy anywhere near my computer.

You are correct, it isn't all that clear. We did not have much time to alter this phpBB theme to make it a little more user friendly. If you please see the following picture, it should help you find how to alter/upload your avatar:

As we have stated in rules, terms and conditions, "You currently have a 7 minutes window of time to edit something. It is not possible to edit a post once those 7 minutes have past. This is to prevent "rogue elements" to delete data or in case someone's account gets hacked. There is also the issue of quotes where if someone quotes someone else and the original post gets edited, the quote could suddenly become wrong. Unlike 1984, the past cannot be changed here!".

The nature of this website makes us a prime target. We do take several backups and use a pretty good company and a nice "Business plan" for the hosting. Hopefully, hacking this place will NOT be that easy.

This is a little tricky. We agree that it would be good and the easy way to be able to edit the topic but we feels that the cons outweigh its pros in this case.

Altering a topic in the way people usually do, effectively deletes that original post and replaces it with the new edited version. Our philosophy is a little different here. We believe that it is better to create a new topic for the new version rather than editing (deleting) the old one because it will allow users to discuss different versions without interfering with each other. For example some issue might be related to version 3.xx but two months later the topic title and content is suddenly changed to version 4.xx. It can become highly confusing and therefore, we rather see separate topics for different versions.

And again, the indefinite editing time is too risky and it would make quoting something unreliable when the original post can change at any time.

We use Google Analytics to keep visitor statistics. Nothing sinister is going on there, it's only basic visitor statistics but if you feel uncomfortable with Google domains, it is of course within your rights to block them on your PC if you wish. Although, you will remove yourself from our counter by doing so.

Thank you for the detailed explanations and screenshot; I wasn't aware of the breadcrumbs style of the submenus - being used to Win9x and all. It's all clear now.

The Service Pack will stay 3.x until it reaches 3.99. I have icons, bitmaps and scripts that read 3.x. Its a lot harder to get people to do different cosmetics and such, this slows down production when I need certain files and whatnot. So my friends that did do the cosmetics, to keep a burden off them and me, I just stuck with the 3 series. I don't know how to do any artwork or coding. I know a little bit about batch files, quite a bit about INF and packaging manipulation. This is why I decided to name the topic 3.x. It will always be 3.x and I don't see us making it to 3.99. I guess the mod can add the date to the topic when ever I release a new version. Hey mod, can you delete the coming soon in the first post. Thanks

Yes, you are among the people in our list of special customers. We will of course update your original post upon each release of a new version. Just make sure to post a reply in your thread about releasing a new version and the version number. We will add that reply to your original post.

Ps. "Unofficial Windows 98 Second Edition Service Pack 3.x Updated April 15, 2013" was too long for the topic title due to a hard limit in the board software. We added the date inside your topic instead.

I think a live chat option would be great, it would give users the opportunity to speak and get the feel of the site. Allow users who aren't registered to have access as well. I love this site because we do have freedom, but at the same time I don't abuse it either. I'm not posting illegal content, such as child porn (which is sick (because I have a daughter and will kill anything in her way), people personal information etc.... Did you know the Service Pack website is not mine but I have full access to it. I'm able to upload and delete files. The site belongs to Fredledingue which is a really good person. He didn't know me from a can of paint, and give me the opportunity, and I have yet to fuck him over. I would never burn a bridge because that's not my character, but if you ever cross me, fuck the bridge I'm burning you.
